My needs: Assorted light/medium duty work around the home including assorted drainage type work. I see compact loader backhoes all over with "For Sale" signs and I figured at a good price I'd go for one. Renting a small machine is $350+ a day. Any advice on particular models? I saw a landscaper with a small John Deere that was a nice size...unfortunately I didn't stop to talk to him. How old should I consider? My budget....Under $4000. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I'm in Northern NJ.

Rick; you won't find any compact TRACTOR-LOADER-BACKHOEs for $4k. You would need at least $10-12k for a fairly old and used one. If you do, let the rest of us know where.David ....

I am sorry, but I have to agree with the other posts, I don't think you will find a small tractor for $4,000.00 much less a tlb. A good machine will cost roughly$10,000.00 up most likely up!!! Good luck, Steve J ....

Aw heck, don't discourage the poor man too much! I bought my Case 530 loader/backhoefor $500, with two backhoe buckets and two loader buckets. It ain't pretty, but itworks hard. Just before I bought it, I looked at an Oliver loader/backhoe in greatshape for $2,000. Granted, you have to be willing to scour the ads, and have the abilityto judge whether there's sound mechanicals under that dingy paint and rust, butthere are bargains out there. ....

I too don't think you will find even a compact t/l/b under 12k to 15k or so. Although, you can buy a 92 terramite for about 6 to 12k (if you like the machine). Go to a search engine and search for terramite. There are many used ones for sale around the country. Also, most places that rent them have them for sale. BTW - You can rent JD and Kubotas in North(west) NJ for about 200/day, not 350. Terramites can be rented for about 170.Also, many sellers will have leasing arrangements with buyout options where you can get a used 12-16k machine for under 400/month. ....
